SUMMARY

We are greatly saddened by the loss of Christo, whose unforgettable public art projects around the world were wonderful examples of global citizenship.

It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of the artist Christo, renowned for creating, with his wife and artistic partner Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009), monumental, public art projects.

Indefatigable and laser-focused, he was nonetheless warm and generous in discussing his and Jeanne-Claude’s life work – their children as he described them. From giving us the opportunity to experience New York’s Central Park anew under billowing, saffron-hued curtains (The Gates, 2005) to literally offering us the power to walk on water (Floating Piers, 2016, Sulzano, Italy), Christo and Jeanne-Claude transformed our encounters with our surroundings and with each other.

Their projects were not passive objects to be looked at, but rather experiential investigations in community building, from the massive teams that it required to pull off each project to the crowds that joined together to inhabit them. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work made the world feel magical and connected, qualities we need now more than ever.
